More than 150,000 at Pride

Sussex Police have estimated more than 150,000 people took part in Pride on Saturday.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "There have been around a dozen arrests, mainly for drugs offences and disorder."

The event's police commander Superintendent Steve Whitton said: "Once again, people have attended in their thousands to line the streets and take part in the Pride celebrations.

"Given the substantial numbers we have seen, it has been a peaceful and successful event with very few isolated incidents.

I'd like to thank all the organisers and participants for making the event such a great success."

5.15pm: Best float announced

As the festival in Preston Park winds to a close, Brighton Gay Mens' Chorus has been announced as the winner of the best float.

The Terrence Higgins Trust was named as the best walking group.

5pm: Police say Pride has been peaceful

Inspector Brian McCarthy, of Brighton police said: "I am not aware of any problems relating to Pride and everything seems to be running quite well.

"We haven't got thousands of prisoners in.

"It has been very quiet day considering the number of people taking part."

3.45pm: Preston Park at its busiest as heavens open

The rain is really starting to pour now, but Preston Park is packed with people.

All the parade followers have now reached the festival and are not being deterred by the dismal weather.

One woman travelled from Estonia to come to Brighton Pride.

Heli Kastic said: "This is my fourth time I've been down but I think this is the best one.

"It is more spread out this year. Last year was a bit squashed together.

"The thing about Pride it it's not just about gay and lesbian rights. It's a good day to come out and have fun."

3.10pm Argus reporter Rebecca Evans enjoys Abba medley

"I just got into one of the tents in time for an Abba medley," said excited Becky.

"The crowd went wild."

An experienced Prider said: "It's as busy as ever despite the showers and with the rain holding off now this year's Pride seems to have been a proper success."

3pm The rain has stopped

Ramey Richmond has come down from London for his fourth Brighton Pride.

He said: "Pride is so inclusive for families, little kids, locals and visitors.

"It really celebrates having a good time and lets people be who they want to be."

2.30pm Argus reporter Rebecca Evans has the latest update from the Pride festival at Preston Park

"With rain falling some soggy people are giving up and going somewhere dry," said Becky. "Mainly the pub it seems. "But thousands are still braving the slightly smelly mud."

2.15pm: Crowds still pouring into Preston Park

More than half an hour after the last trucks reached the end of the parade, hoards of revellers are still pouring into the park.

1.20pm: Pride parade reaches Preston Park

The parade has now made it to Preston Park where it was given a raptorous welcome by the hordes of waiting revellers.

There are people dressed as fish, Neptune, pirates and everyone seems to have either carrier bags full of drink or a bucket and spade.

Arron Lyon is enjoying his first Pride festival and has traveled from Burton-on-Trent to be here.

The 22-year-old who has come dressed as a pirate, said: "I'm loving it. It's amazing, so different to anything else."

The rain has eased off now but there are still small drops falling.

Despite the slight rain getting people wet it still hasn't deterred a cheeky little boy riding in a fire engine squirting a water pistol at people.

1.15pm: Fears over sirens

One Pride spectator has expressed concerns about the police and ambulance floats using their sirens.

"The cops and ambulances that are part of the procession are all sounding their sirens.

"But what happens if someone genuinely gets hurt and they need to clear the way?"

12.50pm: Oh no. The first rain drops are falling. It seems that weather forecasters do actually kno what they're on about.

Doesn't matter though. People don't seem to be that bothered by it.

Steve Havill has travelled from Essex to be here today.

He said: "It's great so far but it's early days yet. "We're heading off to Preston Park whatever the weather."

12.45pm: Hooray it's The Argus Press Gang team!

Reporter Richard Gurner has manged to hitch a lift with Lucy Cross from circulation and distribution who is doing a sterling job driving our 4x4.

No one has been hurt - yet...

We're blasting out the music as we head towards London Road.

The streets are lined at least ten people deep and there's still no sign of the promised rain. What do weather forcasters know eh?

12.30pm: Argus reporter Richard Gurner has the latest all the Pride action.

Euro MP Caroline Lucas is dressed as a ship's captain on the Green Party float. She's at the top end of the ship behind the wheel.

The Brighton and Hove Gay Men's chorus is belting out Britney Spears' Hit Me Baby One More Time with great enthusiasm and the party is showing no signs of letting up.

Most interesting costume so far? Has to be 30-year-old Darren Hamlin from Brighton. Asked what has he come as he replied: "It's debatable. Maybe an androgenous Merman?"

12:15pm Pride politicians commenting on web

LGBT Lbour said on Twitter: "Great reaction for Labour as we pass Brighton Pavilion."

12noon:The Sussex Police Gay Association just had a massive welcome cheer from the crowds standing outside the Royal Pavilion.

Never before has there been so many officers' whistles going off at once.

It seems everybody in the city is out enjoying Pride and no wonder as the party atmosphere is infectious.

Even the politicians are out in force. Norman Baker, Lib Dem MP for Lewes, is looking rather casual in his jeans and t-shirt and huge beaming smile.

He told us: "It's a very good turnout." Unlike most elections then.

11.50am: Traffic delays for people heading top Pride.

lucy_watt said on Twitter: "Long delays on motorway so likely to miss the Parade."

11.40am: The parade has reached West Street

The party is now in full swing and the bad weather is still holding off.

Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, heading up the Dream Team float said: "It's fantastic. I'm glad to be here.

"We've got to remember this is a celebration but it's also a battle for human rights.

"We still have to battle for same sex marriage and that has to change."

11am: Pride 2009 has officially started.

The noise is unbelieveable with plenty of drums being bashed and noise pumping out of various sound systems.

The parade is being led by Sussex Police's Gay Police Association.

The seafront is absolutely packed and there are rainbow flags everywhere

10.45am: The crowds have gathered at Madeira Drive ready for the start of Pride 2009.

The atmosphere is electric. Everyone is up for a party and the costumes are amazing.

The weather is holding up for now but there are plenty of clouds in the sky.

According to reports it will rain later but let's keep our fingers crossed it won't happen anytime soon.

Whatever the weather though, the hundreds of people packed on to the seafront are determined to have a great day.

Mel Noon, 48, has travelled from Bexhill for today with his wife.

He said: "We are loving it so far. It's our first time. It's one of those things we've always been meaning to do."
