Police are preparing for terrorist strikes and strikes and civil emergencies at a city centre hotel today as £6 million plans for security at the Labour Party Conference enter their final stages.
About 80 key players are talking through the possible scenarios for this September’s event at a meeting at the Grand Hotel, Brighton.
The ‘table-top’ meeting includes representatives from the Labour Party, Sussex Police, Brighton and Hove City Council, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, South East Coast Ambulance Service, security firm G4S and other businesses and venues taking part in the events.
They are talking through the possible circumstances at the presitigious political setpiece, which is expected to bring £10 million into the city’s economy.
Superintendent Grenville Wilson, who is co-ordinating the planning for the operation, said: “The multi-agency table-top exercise is part of a programme of exercises that will ensure we are match fit to deal with any event, including terrorism or civil emergencies.
“All the emergency services and key authorities have a part to play in our plans and together we will be ready when the conference starts in 100 days.
“The emphasis is on being prepared and keeping people safe.”
Representatives from Greater Manchester Police are observing the table-top exercise in preparation for hosting the Conservative Party the week after the conference in Brighton.
