Meet Kimora Lee-Simmons. She’s a mogul. She’s a model. She’s a mom. She’s a m….
She’s a lot of things beginning with M.
In 2007, the former cream of the catwalk landed her own reality show, came up with her own catchphrase -‘fabulosity’ and allowed us, the salivating viewers, into her life. Except it seems that very few were actually interested, the show only ran for two seasons before E! the entertainment channel, gave up on the idea. The Style Network has bravely decided to pick up the baton and give her another shot. They are currently premiering a 3rd series, so that the world can continue to learn from Kimora - mogul, model, what was the other one? Oh yeah, mom. She’s a MOM.
Kimora divorced her husband, Russell Simmons in 2005; hence she is a single MOM to their two daughters, Aoki and Ming. She employs a vast empire of cowering staff to help her parent these two mini dynasties and over-see the running of her fashion line – Baby Phat. Some might speculate that Baby Phat is Kimora’s 3rd, perhaps even favoured child. She certainly spends a lot more time with it. The girls have to content themselves with visits to baby beauty parlours or running amuck in toy stores screaming ‘I want I want I want!’. When Kimora isn’t busy being a mogul model MOM, she jets around, showing off, mingling with the equally rich and fabulous and being rude to people. Mostly her staff, who assume the foetal position whenever they spot her approaching.
I can’t really fathom the waning popularity of the show. Displaying a delicious lack of self-awareness which always makes these sortsof people immense fun to watch, Kimora puts me in mind of a medieval ruler. She genuinely believes that her place at the top of the pile is destiny, and that everyone exists purely to fetch her skinny lattes and paint her toenails. I can picture her at the head of a groaning banquet table, tossing scraps to her yappy little dogs and ordering the scrofula ridden serfs to dance for her amusement. Evicting a family of 16 from their pitiful smallholding because she wants to put a hot tub on it. She’s magnificent. And dreadful. How can you not want to watch this?
