What a day! I woke up at 9 on Saturday knowing that a win would guarantee us playing in League One next season.
I felt sick, I couldn't concentrate and all I wanted to do was go to the pub!
So that's what I did, first stop was at 11am in the Railway Bell after sinking a few pints and chatting to some Stockport fans who actually wanted us to win as they did not want us to go down. I feel a bit sorry for them, in January they were pushing for play offs, but they have had massive money problems and ended up being deducted 10 points for going into administration. The only positive they can take from it I suppose is that they had it taken off this season and not next.
So second port of call was the eagle, we eventually got there after having to run through a gap as the children's parade made its way into town, so we started talking to two other Brighton fans. Ironically they were sitting in the two seats next to us! 9,000 people going and two people we meet in a pub which we have never met before end up being next to us. Bizarre.
After a few more beers we made our way along to the Crown and Anchor which was predictably rammed with Albion all in good voice, it was a great atmosphere and everyone was in a drunken happy mood. So it was nearing 3pm and we brought a few cans and walked to the ground, taking part in "we’re the left side, we’re the right side" with other Albion fans on the other side. It was great.
So to the game. I honestly cannot remember a lot of the game, I was listening to Southern Counties at the other scores as I was confident we would win. After seven minutes, the first goal of the day in the battle to stay up, Carlisle took the lead against Milwall. This dropped us into the bottom four, then on the stroke of half time Leeds took the lead against Northampton. As things stood they would go down and we would stay up.
The first half for Brighton was not good we did not play very well, Hart and Andrew went off with Injury, but we were holding on 0-0.
My best mate Max always comes out with gems of stupidity. I remember when we played Man City in the cup and Thomson played a ball and Max said: "What is he doing," and then we went onto score from it. This time however he said: "I think we should bring Davies on and leave Forster on the bench," and as soon as he said that in the back of mind I knew he would score and low and behold Forster did.
73 minutes he picked up a deflection from Dicker’s shot and slotted it home. The best person to ask what the goal was like was my mate Matt who paid £40 for a ticket and was in the toilet when we scored -gutted!
Rejoice we had scored and with Northampton now two down away to Leeds and Crewe 3-0 down at home to Leicester. We knew we were safe, all we were waiting for was the full time whistle so we could run onto the pitch and cheer the fact that we saved, sorry, Russell Slade saved us from relegation.
The whistle went and on we went only to realise it was a free kick so off we came and then two minutes later the referee waved the players over and blew the whistle and on we went. We did it on the last game of the season. Who would have thought after being 8 points adrift with 7 games left after the Mk Dons game, we amassed 16 points from a possible 21 at the end of the season? Amazing.
So off to celebrate. We went back to the Crown and Anchor which was heaving with very wide smiled Albion fans. We then ventured out to the Wick in Hove, we got the bus there and took some pictures of a drunk Albion fan hanging upside down on the 5a bus. How you ask? He was holding onto to hand rail and was upside down for at least five minutes.
So after leaving the Wick we got a cab to the Crescent but I was starting to flag now. It was approaching 9.30pm and we had been out since 11am. So time to call it a day, or that's what I thought. Off to Grand Central and then finally the last port of call, the Duke of Wellington. I finally decided to go home and eat as I had unfortunately forgotten to eat since breakfast. I want to thank Matt Howarth, Matt Jenner and Max Denyer for a wicked day out and especially thanks to Max who was been to all away games I have been to this season.
So what has been an up and down season turned out nice in the end. Slade has been offered a two year deal which he has accepted and he thoroughly deserves it. Also we need to work out the contracts of 16 players. I think we should definitely keep hold of Owusu and Dicker, they have been very important in our battle with survival. Also Whing player of the season has given everything all year.
So what are my highlights and low lights of this season? Well my highlight would have to be Bristol Rovers away. This was a great game and a brilliant travelling support. Okay, it was not on the same level numbers wise as MK Dons, which was another great away day, but the significance of the result and the fact that we nearly never made it.
Low point of the season was the 4-0 Home defeat by Crewe, it was the fact that we did not turn up and the fact McNulty got badly injured.
So what can we expect from next season? Play offs is what everyone will be hoping for and I think if we can keep key players, and keep key players fit, then we can achieve great things. I'm going for automatic promotion next year, I do not think League One will be as hard as it was this year, but away trips to Southampton, Charlton and Norwich will ensure we will have an entertaining season.
Thanks to all people who have read my blogs and made comments I will be back next season and hopefully I will still be doing it when we are in the Championship, and more importantly at Falmer!
