In response to Stephen Young’s article, (The Argus, April 9), in which he bases his attack on my article about car parking charges merely on the “suggestion” that I wish for more cars in the city centre, I have a few comments.

My article was clearly about increase charging at the council car parks and the subsequent reasons for it, and I questioned whether we, as tax payers, are receiving value for money.

In addition I called for a combined, or joined-up-thinking approach, to transport as that was what this administration claimed we would get.

At no time did I argue pedestrians, bus users, cyclists, etc, were not as welcome or were economically inferior. That, I take umbrage to.

I have visited many cities, worldwide, and have seen both good and bad. The good all have integrated transport systems, something I would champion, as, I would more pedestrianisation – in the right places, and of a high quality, such as in New Road.

I also have campaigned against the increase of large chains in The Lanes and North Laine in order to avoid theme becoming homogen-ised. Although I do own a car, I prefer to walk or cycle.

If people like Mr Young use insulting, incorrect and imbalanced rhetoric in their arguments in the name of their cause they do nothing but alienate people.
