Have you bought a fish pie lately? Being aware of the importance of fish in one’s diet, I have bought these for my family for many years, especially for my mother who is in her 80s and finds them easy to prepare and to digest.
Being more value-conscious lately I have been scrutinising labels much more carefully.
I was shocked to find out that two of the best-known brands have either 10% or 15% of fish in them. It would be much more intelligent to label them “sauce and potato pie,” leave out the miniscule amount of fish, cut the price, and open them up to the large and growing veggie market.
I wrote to the “10% fish” company asking for their comments, and requesting information on the fish and meat amounts of their most popular brands so I could shop accordingly.
Sadly, I eventually received a rather off-hand reply without any of the information I had requested. In other words, they don’t care.
Moral is, if you can find time in your busy life to read the labels, you will get better value. And don’t assume the most prestigious brands are good value for money. As an own brand devotee I am moving almost exclusively in that direction these days.
