I am writing to express my total opposition to the building of a Tesco superstore in London Road, Brighton.
As someone who lives close to the proposed site I am opposed to this development for a number of reasons: First, air pollution caused by traffic congestion. A 950 space car park is planned for the superstore, which would lead to a huge number of cars coming and going with significantly increased congestion and air pollution which is an obvious public health issue; Second, loss of business and jobs in this area. In studies in which the building of a superstore results in the demolition or closing down of small businesses close to the store, it is the case that fewer jobs exist.
And third, quality of the environment.
I would rather see regeneration of the Open Market, a great range of small businesses in this area, and plans for traffic, pedestrians and cyclists to produce a human-scale friendly environment.
