A man has appeared in court following a frenzied stabbing in front of shocked shop staff.

Waleed Bashir suffered a deep gash to his left shoulder after he was attacked at the Welldone shop in Castle Square, Brighton. Mr Bashir was also bitten on his right hand during the confrontation in the shop.

Sadiq Salam, 20, is accused of trying to kill Mr Bashir during a row. He appeared at Lewes Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder and common assault over the incident at 4pm on Wednesday. He also faces a further charge of threatening to kill Mr Bashir on March 22.

Both men are Sudanese and are believed to have fallen out because of differing political beliefs.

Salam, a refugee from Darfur, was an employee at Welldone and Mr Bashir is believed to have previously worked there.

Salam needed an interpreter when he appeared in court during an hour-long hearing on Saturday. He did not enter a plea after the charges were put to him by the magistrates’ clerk.

Suzanne Soros, prosecuting, outlined the allegations against Salam, of Charlotte Mews, St George’s Road, Brighton.

Magistrate Dr Howard Carter remanded Salam in custody to appear for a preliminary hearing at Lewes Crown Court on May 11.

Police are still looking for people who were in the area at the time of the attack. Anyone with information should call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 and ask for the Operation Hunter incident room.
