The sixth may be Mahler’s most conventional and tightly-reined symphony, but it is a psychologically unbridled and explosive piece, foreshadowing the Great War and creating classical music’s first true 20th century achievement.

This performance sees the Philharmonia Orchestra take on one of the last century’s most prophetic works.

Esa-Pekka Salonen marked his arrival as the orchestra’s new principal conductor with a gala season at the South Bank last September.

Now he makes his Brighton festival debut.
