The Norfolk Hotel in King’s Road, Brighton, started in 1824 as an inn. But the present building, designed by Horatio Goulty, dates from 1866. This picture was taken in 1905.
Eventually it was taken over by AVP Industries, which also owned the Bedford and Metropole hotels, and the West Pier.
Its boss, Harold Poster, was very annoyed when Brighton Council refused permission to replace it with flats, but he eventually sold it to the Feld family, who ran the Beach Hotel in nearby Regency Square.
Alfred and Lily Feld transformed the hotel and made many additions, including a swimming pool. Alfred later became president of the hotels' association and Mayor of Brighton.
