The Hofesh Shechter Company’s performance of Uprising in November – the first of its three-year residency at Brighton Dome – met with an ecstatic audience reception.
Its highly-charged potrayal of masculinity, enacted by a seven-strong cast of male dancers, will now be countered with this specially-commissioned all-female piece.
Inspired by and created for the company’s seven female dancers, The Art Of Not Looking Back shines new light on his signature theme of man against the world.
Also featured will be a selection of Shechter’s early pieces, each of which will be receiving its Brighton premiere. These include Untitled, a solo piece devised in 2005, which sees rising star Philip Hulford negotiate love, life and death to Shechter’s verbal soundtrack.
Israeli-born Shechter’s explosive dance shows have captivated critics, and have been particularly effective in engaging young people with dance – helped in no small part by his striking choreography for Channel 4 teen show Skins.
The much-feted company has made Brighton Dome its base, and the result is this new piece, as well as Bangers And Mash.
Thursday’s performance will be followed by a talk with Hofesh Shechter.
