You could sense the impatience in the room as The Rakes appeared on stage, half an hour later than scheduled.

To be fair, it wasn’t their fault. With second support band Sky Larkin overrunning, stage set up and sound checks meant there would be an inevitable delay.

But The Rakes made up for it when they finally appeared, dishing out song after song, in short, sharp bursts.

This was certainly appreciated by the crowd, who took a while to warm up but were soon furiously nodding their heads.

Lead singer Alan Donohoe wore bright red woolly gloves for the first 15 minutes, despite it not being cold.

The band played several songs from their new album, Klang, including The Light From Your Mac and 1989. Donohoe gestured to those puffing away outdoors to introduce The Loneliness Of The Outdoor Smoker.

All Too Human and 22 Grand Job both went down well, as did The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect, which got the crowd singing.

Support bands Official Secrets Act and Sky Larkin also proved popular, although the guitars during the latter were so loud they often drowned out the lead singer’s voice. That said, they are definitely ones to watch.
