So, we have now made our final trip of this season in the highest tier of non-league football. And what a journey we have enjoyed over the past few months. Many pastures new and some old familiar favourites. The last trip saw us venture up north again and to the scenic city of York. As we got closer, the sheer splendour of the Minster rose on the horizon. For those expecting to be treated to a football ground rising with splendour were to be disappointed.
Bootham Crescent, oh sorry Kit-Kat Crescent wasn't really what I had expected for a former League ground. Without showing any disrespect, it fell a long way short of my pre-conceived idea. We have visited far better grounds that have never graced the Football League. However, the welcome we were given couldn't have been better. Is it our reputation that has spread through the Blue Square premier? Do they expect a gang of zimmer wielding oldies? Once again it was nice to mingle in the bar pre-match and have a good chat with the locals.
The game itself had little meaning for us southerners but the local guys had a hell of a lot resting on it. Was it one away game too far for the part-time heroes from Sussex? With the spring sunshine blazing down the Boro followers took their places in the away end, and we did the boys proud! 79 officially entered but I think maybe an extra ten could be added to that figure. Quite a few were ex-pats of Eastbourne now living in the north, some of which had popped up at Wrexham and Northwich too.
Now it's not often that you stand on the terraces and find yourself inhaling the aroma of chocolate but of course York is famous for the production of such delicacies. I think Terry gets his Oranges here too! It was enough to make the ladies in the ground swoon! Forget the Lynx effect guys, rub a block of Dairy Milk over your face and you'll be quid's in! (please note, other sprays and confectionary brands are available) The referee wore his whistle out and probably bruised his arm the number of times he hit it indicating handball! Smarty almost got himself booked for contesting one where you could see the daylight between his body and the ball! York took the points that were vital for their relegation battle and to be honest we went through the motions. We were still sitting 12th and with one game left, it has been more than a satisfactory time on the road.
Next week we will have a role of honour for the various highlights of the season. This week is time to pay tribute to the travelling faithful. To you all for the miles you have covered. 18 to Barrow on a wet winter's night, eight plus to Alty midweek. Whether it has been by coach, car, or train, we seem to manage to get support at every game. I have been lucky enough to get to most, and wouldn't have missed any of them. Okay I may have passed on the Barrow one but only for the length of journey. It was worth it for the experience. Thanks also to all behind the scenes of getting the coaches booked and all the work involved.
Sunday afternoon at 4pm sees the season close with the visit of Barrow. We had a great time with them in the FA cup at the Lane and I know that some firm friendships will be renewed. I also hope that the home fans give the team the sign off they deserve. Til next week blog fans.
