Following your article “Sussex police officers in Aids scare” (The Argus, April 18), readers may be left thinking HIV can be passed on via a bite.
HIV isn’t transmitted through saliva so biting someone would not pass on the virus.
The defendant would have to be bleeding from the mouth into the open wound of the police officer for any chance of the virus being transmitted. The likelihood of it being passed on in this way is very slim indeed.
Articles like this can increase the stigma associated with HIV.
