Like many others I too have not had my recycling collected on the normal day today (The Argus, April 22).
Earlier this year, I warned at a meeting of the council’s environment scrutiny committee, which I chair, that severe disruption to the recycling rounds might actively discourage residents from recycling.
The Conservative cabinet running the council are trying to do too much, too quickly, in their efforts to cut costs in refuse and recycling and £2 million cuts to the Cityclean budget are bound to have an effect on the service.
It is not enough to say this is down to new rounds after the opening of the recycling facility at Hollingdean, commissioned by the previous Labour council administration.
Changes should have been introduced more gradually, with proper consultation and the resources to deal with any “teething troubles”.
Money saved from the opening of the Hollingdean centre should have been re-invested in the service, including the introduction of kitchen waste recycling collections, vastly reducing the amounts we send to landfill.
The Conservatives and their cuts to the Cityclean budget are placing huge demands on an overstretched service and residents are suffering as a result.
