I read that Lewes District Council have refused to allow the Easter cross to be erected on the Downs (The Argus, April 18).

Yet again we see health and safety gone mad. During my childhood in Lewes we used to play on the Downs and it was full of rabbit holes and fox holes. The rabbits and foxes won’t have gone away. Are the council going to monitor their holes and either watch over them or fill them in?

Is it not beyond the capabilities of man to fit a large piece of wood in the hole when it is not being used?
