A pedestrian has been killed on the railway line north of Uckfield.
The incident happened at the Hempstead crossing near Uckfield railway station between 12.40pm and 12.45pm today.
The Uckfield to London Bridge Southern service had left the station at 12.34pm when it hit the pedestrian.
Sussex police and the coroner's officer are at the scene and the line has been closed.
A spokesman for Southern said the fatality was not being treated as suspicious and that all Uckfield services would start and finish from Crowborough until the line is reopened.
The Hempstead crossing is a gated footpath across the line which joins one field to another.
Although there are no warning signals for pedestrians it is well signposted to warn pedestrians about oncoming trains.
