We would like to assure Adam Trimingham (The Argus, April 15) that Brighton and Hove City Council is committed to providing a high standard of public toilets.
The council tests its standards by entering the independent Loo Of The Year Award every year and currently holds second place in the premier league of local authorities.
Thirteen of our 78 toilets are on the promenade from Hove Lagoon to Black Rock and there are ten in the city centre. Another 13 are part of the council’s “You’re Welcome” scheme.
The picture published in The Argus is several years old and shows toilets that were closed in 1994.
Over the past few years the council has opened new toilets, including in Wild Park, Blakers Park, Queen’s Park, Madeira Drive at Peter Pan’s play area, Ovingdean Undercliff and Rottingdean recreation ground.
Opening hours vary in the city depending on location and time of year, with longer summer opening starting on Good Friday through to the end of September.
We’ll be continuing to improve facilities and asking the public what they think.
Last year’s customer survey showed that 96% of people thought toilets were clean and 99% said they would be happy to use them again.
