A PUB plagued by a catalogue of crime and disorder could have its licence to sell alcohol revoked.

Bosses from The Winner pub, in Elm Grove, Brighton, will face councillors today and could see the venue stripped of its licence.

Police have compiled a 20-page dosier of problems at the pub which will be presented to Brighton and Hove City Council’s licensing panel.

On six occasions that police officers visited the pub between September and February, they saw fights, a karaoke night which turned to violence, drunken revellers and children plied with alcohol.

Police were called to the pub on November 9 after a fight broke out.

But when officers arrived, pub staff and customers would not answer questions.

PC Stephen Greeno, of Sussex Police, said: “I looked around and saw a male with a cut lip and a cut to his forehead.

“I pointed to him and asked how he got his injuries. The landlord replied that he was not going to tell us what happened.”

On February 8, police had to be called out again after a man in his 60s stumbled out of the pub and was knocked down by a car.

PC Joanne Sturgess said bar staff told her the man had just got out of prison and had been drinking in the pub for hours.

She said: “I entered The Winner for potential witnesses to the incident.

“Unfortunately, I was met by very drunk persons more interested in asking me for a date than giving me information.

“They could not speak without slurring and spitting over themselves and could hardly stand.

“The Winner has been totally irresponsible in serving this elderly man, especially as he had been drinking for so long and the bartender did not feel he was a stable person. This incident could easily have been fatal.”

Police and council officials also found the pub serving drink to underage teenagers on several occasions.

Pubs’n’Bars Ltd, which runs The Winner and five other Brighton pubs, declined to comment.

The licensing committee is meeting at Brighton town hall at 2pm today.
