No one would have hoped that recent rumours of a Stone Roses reunion turned out to be false more than the Completes, as they are known.
It is one thing to be a tribute band to a group that no longer exists, quite another when your mere presence on stage reminds everyone that they couldn’t get a ticket for the proper gig taking place up the road.
However, anyone familiar with the Roses will know that a reunion was as likely as communal hymns at an Old Firm match and it wasn’t long before lead guitarist-turned artist John Squire nixed the whole idea, so the Completes still have the stage to themselves.
Classics such as Waterfall, Mersey Paradise and Love Spreads got the crowd freaky-dancing like it was 1989, while die-hard fans were treated to B-sides such as Garage Flower and Here It Comes.
While the bassist and guitarist were pretty much note-perfect, the drummer couldn’t quite reach the rhythmic skills of Reni, although this was balanced by the fact the lead singer was actually better than Ian Brown.
Even better than the real thing? Not quite, but for sheer entertainment value, the Completes are hard to beat.
