Nick Herbert’s comments in a national newspaper are another example of an up-and-coming politician seizing on a subject purely for self-promotion.
I doubt whether Mr Herbert (Conservative MP for Arundel and South Downs) has even been to the stadium site. If he had he would realise how ridiculous his comments are.
The land rises on the south side of the stadium, which would obscure much of the building and there are no views of the Downs from the north, west or east.
The best views of the Downs in the area in question are from Woodingdean and it is doubtful you would see much, if any, of the stadium from there.
The opinion that the Downs would be damaged was not shared by the planning inspector.
It is also ridiculous to try to make political capital out of a decision which was reached after two public inquiries and a referendum, which supported the site.
The stadium will create much-needed employment and secure the future of the football team for the pleasure of generations to come.
It should be welcomed.
