Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears has reassured traders in a busy shopping street there will be no ban on the delivery of goods.

Brighton and Hove Bus Company has been putting pressure on the council to stop delivery trucks loading and unloading between 7am and 10am in the morning and 4pm to 6pm in the evening - the times businesses in Western Road expect the bulk of their goods to arrive.

The council has come under pressure from Roger French, the boss of Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company.

But in her blog councillor Mears said: "I would like to reassure businesses in Western Road that the council will not be introducing any restrictions which will have a negative impact on trade during a recesssion.

"I do appreciate the bus company's concerns about congestion and they are quite right to raise it with the council.

"However, they are a private business, just like the traders and I want to ensure that everyone is treated fairly."
