THE Bikeability project, teaching children to cycle, sounds an extremely good idea (The Argus, April 3).
Hopefully, cycle lanes could be provided on all main roads so that once children have mastered control of their bicycle they would not have to get involved with traffic.
These cycle lanes would be an inducement for adults to cycle to work – if distances were not too great – instead of using their cars.
The cycle lanes would need to be co-ordinated. I have noticed so many have to cross main roads with all the traffic. Perhaps crossings, like pedestrian crossings, could be made?
Cycling would contribute to health and counteract obesity as well as cutting carbon emissions. Public buildings, schools, etc, would have to provide safe cycle racks. The financial outlay for this would obviously be quite considerable but at least it would be a one-off expenditure.
