A burst main sent gallons of sewage flooding across a road.

Residents in West Way, Lancing, faced chaos throughout Good Friday as engineers from Southern Water worked to fix the problem.

Four lorries were brought in to clear the sewage from the road and transport it to a treatment centre.

Water company staff went to West Way to speak to residents about their concerns.

A spokeswoman for Southern Water said there had been no reports of homes and gardens being affected.

She said: “We have a crew down there and they are working on the problem but they are restricted in when they can dig because the ground is affected by high tides.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and disruption this has caused and we are doing everything possible to deal with the problem.”

One resident who did not want to be named, said: “It is pretty disgusting. We had a similar problem about a year ago and it's clear they need to look at what is going on here.”
