An historic seafront lift has reached new heights after a restoration project.
The Victorian lift on Brighton seafront, which links Marine Parade with Madeira Drive, re-opened in time for the Easter weekend.
The Grade II listed lift, which shut in July 2007, has undergone a £250,000 restoration project funded by Brighton and Hove City Council.
It was re-opened by the council’s leader, councillor Mary Mears, who was accompanied by her grandchildren.
Coun Mears said: “I am absolutely thrilled that this unique Victorian lift is back in action and that we have delivered our promise to re-open in time for the Easter weekend.
“This council is committed to preserving our heritage and it’s wonderful to know that this Grade II lift will continue to transport visitors to the seafront well into the future.
“We are now looking forward to unveiling another superb example of Victorian architecture when the restored seafront bandstand also re-opens later this summer.”
At the end of the season more improvements will be made to the 1930s lift, including refurbishing the lift car.
Rooftop ornamental griffins and a dolphin weather vane will also be restored at a later date.
