Excited fans arrived early at the Freebutt to see 21-year old Mica Levi and her band execute their unique and eclectic take on electro-grime.

Sounding even crazier than on record, Micachu demonstrated there is enough elasticity in their odd arrangements to keep an audience excitedly guessing as to what they’re going to do next.

And the strength of this particular crowd’s enthusiasm seemed even to surprise the main attraction herself.

While drummer Marc Pell acted as the spokesperson for the group of young eccentrics, Mica engaged in some playful banter. Indeed, playful was exactly how the performance could best be described.

The Londoner’s musical experience, which includes writing an orchestral piece for the London Philharmonic, married to influences such as Kate Bush and The Pet Shop Boys. The result is intricate, fun and melodious arrangements, layered on top of an unpretentious level of urban cool.

Timing for Micachu’s debut release, out last month on Rough Trade, couldn’t be better. Music like this demands the sun and will no doubt be a staple at outdoor parties around the country this summer.
