A council has defended its decision to fine people £75 for putting out their recycling boxes on the wrong day.
On Saturday, The Argus revealed that Brighton and Hove City Council had sent out letters warning residents that they faced a fine or even court for repeat offences.
Hundreds of letters have been sent to residents in roads after inspections by council employees.
People who had received the letter branded the move heavy-handed and draconian.
Some said that they were confused about the new changes to collection days.
A spokesman said: "We work with local residents to keep the streets in their area clean. Reminder cards are dropped through letterboxes, or calls made, if people regularly put out their refuse and recycling on the wrong day.
"A fine would only ever be considered as a last resort in instances where refuse or recycling is repeatedly left out on the wrong day never for a single instance.
"The council would much rather collect refuse or recycling on the correct day than issue a fine."
