70 years ago, on November 26th 1938, the Bishop of Chichester, Bishop George Bell and The Revd James Hannington, son of Bishop James Hannington who had been speared to death in Uganda, laid foundation stones to begin the building of the church dedicated to Bishop Hannington's memory. One of the stones came from Uganda, near to where the Bishop was murdered.
On Saturday 29th, there will be a Celebration afternoon from 2-5pm with bouncy castle for the tinys, sideshows, games, teas and new celebration mugs will be on sale. Watercolours painted by Bishop Hannington in Uganda will be included in an exhibition of photographs and press cuttings. At 3.0pm a children's pageant will re-enact the stone laying ceremony, attended by a mystery guest.
On Sunday November 30th at 10.0am there will be a thanksgiving service for what has been achieved during the past 70 years, and prayers for God's guidance for the future. The service will be attended by Richard Hannington, Bishop Hannington's grandson.
All are welcome, admission is free.
The church is at the junction of Nevill Avenue and Holmes Avenue, Hove. Busses 5 and 5A pass the door.
