Residents living near Withdean Park and Carden Avenue are raising objections to a resubmitted planning application from Sunrise Senior Living.
Its plans to build an 80-bed nursing home on the corner of London Road and Carden Avenue opposite Westdene were previously rejected by Brighton and Hove City Council planning committee.
However, Sunrise has now appealed against the decision and is resubmitting the plans.
Six houses on the junction at the end of Carden Avenue would be demolished and replaced with what local resident Anthony Radmal described as a "monolith".
He said: “It will be the first building people visiting the city and waiting at the roundabout will see.”
As well as objections on aesthetic grounds, concerns also have been raised about the environmental impact of the scheme which includes plans to build on Withdean Park itself, the increase in traffic, the destruction of family housing and the lack of social aspects of the plans.
Fees for those who would live in the nursing home are expected to be in the region of £50,000 a year.
The planning application can be viewed in the planning applications section of the council website.
