An “inseparable” mother and daughter who were swept away by flash floods in Spain have been remembered at a funeral service.

Lorraine Cullen, 47, who was known by friends as Loz, and her 14-year-old daughter Lauren, known as Little Loz, died on October 9 while trying to cross the River Clariano to reach their home in L’Olleria, near Valencia.

At their funeral service yesterday at the Downs Crematorium in Bear Road, Brighton, more than 150 mourners packed into the chapel and the service was broadcast over loudspeakers for those stood outside.

Many people flew black flags from their cars as they arrived at the service.

The coffins, which each had a single red rose and a single white rose on them, were carried into the chapel to Westlife’s song Home.

During the service a tribute from Lauren’s twin sister Samantha, who survived the tragedy by clinging to a branch, and her cousins was read by the Rev Lisa Jackson, who led the service.

It read: “Lorraine you were an amazing mum and auntie, a fantastic wife and sister and a precious friend and an inspiration to everyone.”

They described Lauren as being “like her mum in every single way” and said Lorraine was the life and soul of the party, who “lit up the room” whenever she walked in.

They said: “You both have hearts of gold and you will be so deeply missed by everyone who knows you.

“We are glad you have each other.

“We love you both so much and can still hear your laughter now.”

Mrs Cullen’s father, Ray, also paid tribute to the pair.

He said: “We weren’t prepared for you to go, our little girls. You were too full of life to be taken away from us so soon.”

Ms Jackson read a poem on behalf of Mrs Cullen’s husband, Mark, 49, called If Tears Could Build A Stairway.

The couple’s two sons, Daniel, 22, and Darren, 19, also attended the service.

During her address, Ms Jackson talked about the memories the family and friends had of the pair, including how Lauren was always close to her mother’s side. She said: “We none of us know how long we will enjoy on this earth. But nothing can prepare us for occasions like this.

“Wrapped up with all the memories of happiness in the past are also the dreams of the future, the hopes and the plans for what might have been.

“There will be times when the grief seems never ending but there will be glimpses of light through the darkness.”

She also read a passage from Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone about how the love of Harry’s dead parents would protect him forever.

She added: “The love that you have shared with Lorraine and Lauren will have left its mark. It’s in your very skin and nothing can take it away from you.”

Mourners left the service to the sound of Mariah Carey’s Bye Bye.
