There are hopes a storm ravaged pier may be able to reopen early next week.

Worthing Borough Council said that the scaffolding was being dismantled on Friday, with minor repair work still needed to be completed.

The pier has been closed since October 20 when structural damage to its supports, believed to have been caused by debris from a storm, was found.

The latest work allowed for the construction of a platform so that engineers can complete the work from the above deck rather than the shore.

A spokeswoman for Adur and Worthing Borough Council said: "The scaffolding is today being dismantled so that the pier can be fully reopened to the public.

"There is still some minor repair work needed before we can unlock the gates for the community and we plan to have that all done early next week."
