Traffic has been at a standstill in the city centre after Storm Bert cause more scaffolding to become unsafe.

Sussex Police have partially closed Cannon Place in Brighton causing delays to hundreds of shoppers trying to leave city centre.

Cars can be seen stuck at a standstill as police divert the traffic from Churchill Square Car Park on to Russell Road.

Police have blocked the junction with the seafront and Russell Road.

The scaffolding at the bottom of Cannon Place has been deemed to be ‘unsafe’ and so safety precautions have been put in place.

This is not the first case of scaffolding becoming unsafe today, as earlier today police and the fire service attended an incident in Worthing.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said at the time: “Police have attended to close the road while recovery of the scaffolding is arranged.”

A fire engine was also at the scene to ensure that safety measures were in place.

This all comes after a yellow weather warning for wind was issued for most of East and West Sussex from 3pm yesterday due to “dangerous coastal conditions and disruption” with a “small chance” that the weather could cause a danger to life and injuries.

A number of events have been cancelled this weekend due to the bad weather, including Christmas light switch ons in Chichester and Littlehampton.
