Residents have been warned they could face patches of ice as cold weather sweeps across the country.

The Met Office has released a yellow weather warning for ice covering almost the entirety of Sussex.

The warning, which comes into effect this afternoon, says people could face injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces overnight.

It comes after swathes of the UK have been hit by snow and cold weather.

The yellow weather warning, issued this afternoon, is in effect from 5pm this afternoon until 10am tomorrow on Wednesday, November 20.

The warning covers much of Sussex but will not effect the most coastal communities such as Brighton, Worthing and Eastbourne.

Ice and cold weather could blight areas across the South Downs as well as towns such as Haywards Heath and Crawley.

The Met Office said residents should expect “some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces” as well as “some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths”.

The Argus previously reported earlier this month that some parts of the county could see a smattering of snow – however the wintery weather appears to have not reached the south of the country.

Brighton and Hove City Council also announced they had acquired three new gritters ahead of the winter and their gritting teams would be on standby 24/7 throughout the colder months.

Other parts of the UK have faced up to 20cm of snow, particularly in the North of England as well as Scotland and parts of Wales.
