Armed police responded to reports of a man with a knife in the street.
Officers descended on Parklands Road, Hassocks, yesterday afternoon and a 31-year-old local man was arrested in connection with the incident.
He remains in police custody.
Sussex Police said an increased police presence can be expected in the area.
A force spokesman said: “Witnesses or anyone with any information or footage is asked to contact police online or call 101 quoting serial 812 of 14/11.”
