Measures have been taken in a town centre amid a crackdown on rogue drivers.

A new gate has been put up at the eastern end of Montague Street in Worthing as part of Worthing Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and Sussex Police’s efforts to stop people driving on pedestrianised areas of the town without permission.

Vehicles can only enter the pedestrianised zone daily from 4pm to midnight and midnight to 10am to load and unload.

The borough council said the busy shopping area has been accessed by vehicles that are not supposed to be there for “some time”.

“In an effort to crackdown on rogue parking, we also made some changes to Montague Place with our partners earlier this year,” a council spokesman said.

“Planters were moved to block access from Marine Parade and new signage and orders were introduced to better enforce the parking restrictions there.

“The new gate on the eastern end of Montague Street has been funded by West Sussex County Council following our request for more to be done to deny drivers access.

“The pedestrianised areas of our town centre will be monitored and the restrictions enforced by the police.”
