A football club’s ground incurred “significant damage” as a fire broke out on Tuesday night with children sat in the stadium.
A suspected arson attack was carried out at 7.10pm at the Hailsham Town Football Club ground in Western Road. A youth team was sat in the stand when the fire was noticed, the club has stated.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue were called to the scene and tackled the blaze, putting it out by 8.05pm and reporting no injuries.
Children who were a part of the youth team were evacuated safely after the coaches noticed smoke.
Sussex Police assisted the fire service at the incident and are treating it as a suspected deliberate ignition.
Volunteers from the club could also been seen helping at the time.
The club has issued a statement, it said: “Hailsham Town Football Club would like to thank those who have got in touch with us following the fire on the evening of November 12.
“Significant damage has been incurred to the hedge surrounding the ground, the seated grandstand, and also to youth team goalposts.
“We would like to sincerely thank East Sussex Fire and Rescue, our volunteers, youth team coaches, parents and members of the public who attempted to rescue equipment.
“Our Under 14 side had been training on the pitch, and were sitting in the stand for a debrief session when the fire became apparent. Thanks to the quick actions of our coaches, everyone was quickly moved to a place of safety.
“A parent has very kindly set up a GoFundMe page to help the club rebuild, and we are in contact with the insurers to assist.”
The GoFundMe page is seeking to raise £50,000 for the club has accumulated over £1,600 in donations already.
The club added: “It is suspected that the fire was started deliberately, and this senseless incident could have been a lot more serious. It is important, not just for the benefit of the club, but for the benefit of the town as a whole, that anyone with information reports this to the police via the 101 number and reference 47240221810.”
