A fire that broke out at a football club's ground last night is currently being investigated as suspected arson.

Hedges were left burning after a fire broke out at 7.10pm at the Hailsham Town Football Club ground in Western Road.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue were called to the scene and can be seen tackling the blaze which left a billow of orange smoke rising into the sky.

A spokeswoman said: "We were called at 7.10pm on 12 November to reports of a hedge fire at the recreation ground in Western Road, Hailsham.

"Two fire engines from Eastbourne were in attendance and crews used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"There were no reports of any injuries. The fire was out by 8.05pm and the incident was handed over to the police."

Sussex Police assisted the fire service at the incident and are treating it as suspected deliberate ignition.

A spokesman said: "Anyone with any information is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 1235 of 12/1."

Volunteers from the club could also been seen helping at the time.

Once the fire had been extinguished the hedges were left charred and blackened.

A statement by the club said: “The club is aware of a fire in the hedge between the ground and the recreation ground.

“Fire crews are on site, and we thank them, and our volunteers who can be seen in some of the publicly available videos for their efforts in tackling the blaze and saving equipment.”

The club has stated that the fire was limited to the hedges and had damaged one of the stands.
