Commuters faced traffic chaos on the A27 this morning.

Motorists on the section between Falmer and Lewes endured up to 70 minutes of delays and seven miles of congestion after two crashes affected travel.

One happened on the eastbound carriageway and one on the westbound, with a fuel spillage worsening delays on the latter.

The A259 in Peacehaven was also affected by the disruption, with a bus driver on a 12X heading to Brighton through Newhaven and Peacehaven informing passengers they would be facing long delays.

"We are moving at a snail's pace through Peacehaven heading west, the traffic heading east seems fine."

The eastbound crash closed one lane of the carriageway.

The A27 westbound was shut while the accident and fuel spill were cleared but has now reopened and traffic is running normally.
