A fire was deliberately set in an alleyway plagued by drug taking and antisocial behaviour.

Firefighters were called to Brighton's Zion Gardens in the early hours of Saturday morning to tackle the blaze.

It comes after repeated concerns about antisocial behaviour in the street which concerned residents say has been "used like a toilet".

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the scene of the fire at around 4.15am and that the blaze was deliberately set.

She said: "We were called at 4.15am on November 10 to a deliberate fire in an alleyway also affecting the wall of a commercial property.

"Two fire engines from Preston Circus were in attendance. Crews used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots.

"There were no casualties reported and crews left the scene by 6.04am, handing over to UK Power Networks."

Residents say that Zion Gardens, running parallel to Queen's Road, is blighted by drug paraphernalia and antisocial behaviour with some people using the alleyway "like a toilet".

One frightened resident said her children "know too much about drugs because of this" after finding ripped-open bin bags, drug needles and people sprawled in the alley near her home.

Another person who has lived in Brighton for over ten years said problems have got worse since they moved into Zion Gardens.
