Brighton is the second most expensive town or city to study in, data reveals.

As undergraduate tuition fees set to rise to £9,535 a year, many prospective students will be worrying about the increasing cost of higher education.

Mortgage broker L&C Mortgages calculated the affordability of different towns and cities for students to earn a degree, determined by the average student expenditure in each area.  

London took top spot as the most expensive city for students with a monthly student expenditure of £1,542.44 and an average rent price of £1,006.75. 

Brighton came in next, recording a monthly student expenditure of £1,410.33 and an average student rent price of £764. 

Other towns and cities ranking within the top ten most expensive places for students to live include Oxford, Bristol, Cambridge, Reading and Edinburgh.  

At the other end of the spectrum, Middlesbrough was identified as the most affordable place for students to live, with an average monthly expenditure of £758.58. It had a monthly average rent cost of £286.81 for students, based on the average price of a one-bedroom residence. 

Sunderland, Hull, Bangor and Bradford all featured in the top ten most affordable towns and cities to study.
