A bidding war erupted over a rundown bungalow which then sold for nearly double the guide price.

Pooks Hill Cottage in Goldsmiths Avenue, Crowborough went under the auctioneer’s gavel at £485,000 after being listed at £250,000.

There were more than 100 bids at what turned into a hectic auction.

The two-bedroom detached freehold bungalow has a garden and a drive leading to a double garage but is in need of work.

Chris Milne, auction appraiser at Clive Emson Sussex and Surrey, said: “This was good old-fashioned auctioneering with sustained bidding showing the popularity of this vacant property.

“Bidders could see the potential here, which drove up the sale price and resulted in an excellent deal for both vendor and purchaser.

“Our buyer has acquired a property in need of improvement throughout, but one which may even offer potential for development, subject to all necessary consents being obtainable.”

Chris said it needs improvement throughout as it has stained carpets, cracked bedroom walls and wallpaper peeling off.

The bathtub is stained and covered in dirt and the bathroom window shows signs of mould.
