A road has reopened after police with riot shields were called to reports of a man spitting and throwing things out of a window.
Officers descended on Seaside Road in Eastbourne just after 10am due to the incident, which saw the main road closed for hours after fears for public safety.
A cordon was set in place to protect the public while officers and a specialist negotiator tried to engage with the man.
Just after 3.30pm, officers gained entry to the property and a 64-year-old man from Eastbourne was arrested on suspicion of public order offences. He remained in custody at 4pm on Thursday.
Sussex Police Chief Inspector Carrie Kwasniewski said: "I'd like to thank members of the local community for their patience and co-operation while this incident was brought to a safe conclusion."
