Rock and pop legend Sir Rod Steward has praised an RNLI branch for their “great work” as his fan club raised thousands for the cause.

Sir Rod shared a message of support with lifeboat crews as his fan club presented the charity’s branch in Littlehampton with a big cheque for their life-saving work.

The RNLI branch was gifted with £6,000 in funding from the Rod Stewart Fan Club as part of their annual charity drive.

Sharing a message with lifeboat crews, the Maggie May singer said: “What a wonderful donation to such a great cause. Keep up the good work down at Littlehampton RNLI station.”

RNLI crew members Cian Matthews and Nick White were presented with a cheque for the donation by members of the Rod Stewart fan club including Sir Rod’s sister, Mary Cady.

The fan club raises thousands of pounds for charity every year and this year chose to donate to the Littlehampton RNLI as the club has members locally.

Nick said: “It’s always a pleasure to welcome people to our boathouse, but as a Rod Stewart fan myself, this visit was particularly special.

“Everyone at Littlehampton RNLI is blown away by such a generous donation, and I would like to thank every member of the fan club for their kindness.”

Sarah was born in 1963 and spent some time in children’s homes and with foster carers before being adopted  by a couple in East Sussex  when she was aged five.

Rod stopped off on a world tour with a date at the  Brighton Centre in 1978 and performed in Brighton again in November 1986. He played The Amex in June 2014
