A busy road will be closed for more than two months for gas works.

Hove Street in Hove will be shut for about ten weeks as gas distribution company SGN replaces the main pipe.

The work, which started on October 7, involves replacing  the old metal pipe with a new plastic one as there have been reported gas escapes in the area.

A map of each phase of the works on Hove Street (Image: SGN) SGN has outlined four phases for the work between the junctions on Church Road and Kingsway.

Spokesman Bradley Barrow said: "Due to the location of the gas main in the road and for everyone’s safety we will need to temporarily close the road in phases.

"During phase one we’ll be working on the Princes Avenue junction of Hove Street, where we will have a northbound lane closure in place.

"We’ll then close Hove Street from Princes Avenue to the A259 Kingsway.

"There will be no through vehicle access onto the A259 Kingsway.

"Access to Hove Street will be via Church Street."

The Argus understands there is no provided timeframe for each of the phases and it could go on longer than the expected two months.

Mr Barrow said: "In phase three, Hove Street will be closed between the junctions of Princes Avenue and Vallance Road – there will be no through access along Hove Street past Princes Avenue, with access to Vallance Road from the A259 Kingsway.

"And finally in phase four,  we’ll be closing Hove Street between Church Road and Vallance Road, with no through access along Hove Street. Access to Vallance Road will be from the A259 Kingsway."

SGN said access for deliveries and residents will be maintained for the duration of the work.

Bin collection days have been left unchanged but bus routes have been altered and residents are advised to check before travelling.

Mr Barrow said: "Once the gas main has been installed, each property on Hove Street with a gas supply will need to have their service connected to it.

"Access to meters and properties will be required to carry out important safety checks.

"We appreciate road closures are disruptive and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
