Zombies will not make their way along Brighton’s seafront this weekend after plans to bring the event back from the dead fell short.
Brighton’s Zombie Walk saw participants stumbling through the streets in their best undead fancy dress around Halloween. The event was first organised in 2007 but was killed off in 2013 over cost issues.
Organisers had started to crowdfund to try and resurrect the event, with plans initially in place to host the event this weekend.
But, after fundraising efforts fell short of the mark, the event has now been cancelled.
Announcing the news on social media, organisers for the event said: “It [the crowd funder] didn't quite make the goal, so as advised it was boom or bust and for those generous enough to have chipped in you got an unexpected winter windfall.
“Events, especially zombie walk events are hugely fun to put on. They also require significant amounts of time, effort, and resource to organise safely.
“There are some fantastic events across the city this weekend and into next week at many of the venues, clubs and bars in Brighton, but I'm afraid the biggest Halloween event there has ever been in the city isn't quite ready to resurrect just yet.”
Organisers also confirmed that they still aimed to bring the walk back in 2025 and had plans in place to try and achieve this.
The Brighton Zombie Walk, then known as Beach of the Dead, would see thousands of people descend on the city in fancy dress – but initial organisers cancelled the event after it became a “victim of its own success”.
In the year before the event was cancelled more than 6,000 groaning corpses turned up to support the event.
The event took inspirations from other “zombie walk” events which see people dressed up as zombies taking to streets in towns and cities across the country around Halloween.
A new group of organisers had initially looked to raise £1,100 for an initial application to bring back the event, but crowdfunding efforts fell short of the mark.
