Swimmers will take a dip in the chilly Brighton waters to support a lifeline LGBTQIA+ helpline.

Hundreds of swimmers will take the plunge in The Big Dip this weekend to raise funds for Switchboard, a national helpline which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year.

Former professional swimmer Michael Gunning will open the event.

Polly Shute, founder of organisers Pride Swim said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to Pride Swims across the UK and it seemed fitting to end the year with a fundraiser at Brighton, a city synonymous with the LGBTQIA+ community.

“The Big Dip is a fun dash into the sea and a great way to highlight how swimming can connect the queer community in supporting both physical and mental wellbeing.

“We can’t wait to welcome everyone on the day and hope that we’ll be able to mark the occasion with a Big Dip each year.”

Swimmers will take to the beach near Brighton’s Sea Lanes on Saturday afternoon, raising money for Switchboard with a quick dip in the sea.

The event is the latest of 20 Pride Swims in the UK this year and the first of its kind in Brighton.

Polly added she hoped the event was the first of what could become an annual swimming fundraiser in the city.

Michael Gunning, who is also a LGBTQIA+ activist, added: “Water has always been a powerful force in my life, and I can’t wait to join everyone at The Big Dip to share this special moment with the community.

“By coming together, we can share and celebrate the positive benefits the water can bring and create a safe space for everyone to thrive, whether they are new or seasoned swimmers.”

The Big Dip will take place on Saturday, October 26 at 2pm on Brighton beach.
