There was split opinion following the news that Brighton will have a new Christmas fair this year.

Brighton Winter Fayre will take place in St Peter’s Square from December 5 until Christmas Eve.

Visitors can expect a market, grotto, makers market, workshops, covered entertainment spaces and workshops and a central hub showcasing food and drink from local producers.

Last year there was no Christmas market in Brighton after Brighton and Hove City Council failed to organise a replacement in time.

Lots of people were excited by the concept and were glad to have something festive to look forward to.

Diana Bambro wrote on Facebook: “Good I'm glad at least we shall have something festive for Christmas unlike last year nothing at all. If it worked for football and other entertainment so why not that. It will have no effect on traffic just like it didn’t when football and other shows that were shown.

“For all you bah humbugs don't go.”

One reader said they thought the scheme sounded nice and would be visiting.

Another said: “Fantastic! Most things seem to get cancelled nowadays so this is a pleasant change.”

Some people were a bit more bah humbug about the fair and had concerns about how expensive it would be and the effect on traffic.

Kat McGuinness said: “Let’s hope it’s better than previous years and maybe the food could be a tad cheaper.”

James Martin said: “If it's anything like the last one then don't bother.”

Dave Black said: “The last one was small, expensive and just sold overpriced, generic tat.”

Sherral Wood said: “Will you need a mortgage?”

Bill Sykes said: “If it’s anything like previous Christmas markets everything will be overpriced.”

Another reader reflected on Christmases past and hoped for better decorations for the city this year.

Last year’s contemporary installation of a Christmas tree in Churchill Square shopping centre raised eyebrows and was dubbed “embarrassing” by shoppers.

The centre also scrapped its Santa grotto last year.

“I’m just hoping we have a proper Christmas tree and Santa grotto at Churchill Square,” they said.

“Last year was pathetic nothing Christmassy about it.”
