Plans have been submitted for a new The Range store on the edge of a Sussex village.

The home and garden retailer wants to occupy unit 18 at the Billinghurst Enterprise Park in the village's Stane Street.

To go alongside the building, The Range has applied to Horsham District Council for a new warehouse next to the unit.

There will be up to 134 parking spaces provided, including four disabled spaces. Plans are also for ten covered bike spaces.

In the plans, architects Ian C King Associates, on behalf of The Range, said: "The proposed building is a large rectangular single-storey warehouse space typical for this type of units.

"The building will be finished with a palette of materials consistent with those accepted on the remainder of the business park, providing it with a consistent, coherent and quality appearance."

Totally the type of store everyone would benefit from.

"I think it's brilliant," added Clare Francis. "But my bank balance won't agree."

Some did not feel so positive about the plans. In one public comment on the planning register, a resident said: "The store will be great for local jobs and shopping so I don't object to it, but the two roundabouts at the top end of the village are no longer fit for purpose and I can foresee increasing traffic issues as this business park grows.

"I drive this way multiple times a day and often find myself sitting in heavy traffic and waiting long times for a gap in traffic to enter these two little roundabouts.

"A serious upgrade to this section of A29 and A272 needs to be considered, whether that's by adding another lane of traffic in each direction and filter lanes, or adding traffic lights."

The plans have been submitted to Horsham District Council and are open for consultation until Thursday, October 31.

If approved, this will be Sussex's sixth The Range store, with others in Newhaven, Eastbourne, Worthing, Chichester and Crawley.

The Range has been contacted for comment.
