A supermarket has announced new plans after residents feared a major project was on the brink of being axed.

Plans to turn the Meridian Shopping Centre in Peacehaven into a 27,000-square-foot Morrisons had been on the cusp of beginning work earlier this year after Lewes District Council approved the plans in April 2023.

Back in July, Lewes District Council Planning  informed Peacehaven Town Council that work was expected to begin in September.

A Peacehaven resident said: “Residents are up in arms about a supposed Morrisons Superstore being built. There have been no updates at all, and it looks like the project will not go ahead after two years of planning.

“The local community has taken to social media to vent their anger and disappointment fuelling gossip and unrest and are waiting for a statement from Morrisons which is much needed.”

A spokeswoman for Morrisons said: "The development has taken a number of years to come forward. Due to rising construction costs over that time and changes in market demand on the retail units proposed, we are working on a revised proposal that meets the demand and needs of our prospective customers and allows us to deliver a new viable town centre for Peacehaven."
