A council has begun work to remove a historic tree from a green in the heart of a village.

Ringmer Parish Council made the decision on October 8 in its monthly full council meeting.

In August the council fenced off the area around the tree as it collapsed under its own weight due to high wind and its trunk started to split.

At the meeting last week, councillors voted for the removal of both sections of the tree, to grind out the remaining stump and plant a replacement tree.

According to the council, the tree was planted over 80 years ago and is beloved by many in the community,

The wood will be left on the green by the small parking area along North Road for residents to take and use as firewood.

Ringmer Parish Council was contacted for a statement.
